The clock is made of copper with brass weights and individually cast sterling silver figures. It has a quartz movement that runs on one AA battery which is included with the clock. The movement is concealed from view by a copper disk. The entire piece is immersed in a liquid sulfurated potash solution which yields the dark patina. When that is dry, the piece is then waxed for a permanent finish. The hands are brass-plated steel.
