This intricate work by Douglas W. Jones and Kim Kulow-Jones explores the coalescing of fine woodworking and the elemental force of fire via burning. Burning creates a rich, variable surface: grain and glue lines become deeply etched, pattern and structure is emphasized. End-grain ash was used as the material for this piece, its variances and repetition on full display; a white-pigmented wax was then worked into the grain structure left by the burn, while a red pigment was used for the bold central element.
